Here is a short list of things that can really damage your shot at building a successful blog. These things really can make a difference as to whether or not your blog will fly. Personally I want to see everyone's blog have a chance at success, however, you as the author/creator define your own success.

So go through this checklist and ask yourself if you are guilty of any of these things. If you are, reverse them - I promise you that by doing so you will immensely improve the quality of your blog and help your readers have a much better experience. After all you want your readers to come back and help spread the word about your blog, don't you?

Follow up:

Ok, so here is the list of 12 ways to kill a blog:

  1. Color - too much, too bright, clashing obnoxious colors - insults the eyes.
  2. Text - too small, too crowded, low contrast, fancy or fantasy text - too hard to read.
  3. Animations & Flash - flashing, sparkling, jumping, bouncing, talking - annoying.
  4. Sporadic Posting - 3 posts one week, none the next, then one, then none - disappointing and inconsistent.
  5. Topic hopping - blogging about things not related to your main topic - dashes reader expectations.
  6. Template Swapping - changing your blog template as often as your socks - inconsistent, confuses your audience.
  7. Widgets, Widgets and More Widgets - some widgets enhance your blog, some are just bloated toys - busy not attractive.
  8. Keyword Stuffing - using keywords in posts and titles unnecessarily - SEO killer, useless repition and redundancy for you readers.
  9. No Quality Control - Posting just any old thing in a hurry and doing it often - your readers deserve better.
  10. No RSS Subscribe Options - makes it harder for readers to remember to come back - totally irresponsible.
  11. Not Providing A Contact Form or Email Option - you'll never build a blog comminity of supporters fi you don't interact with your readers.
  12. Ignoring Readers Emails - way to stomp your bread and butter - why would they come back?

This is just a short list, I could go on and on and on, but your eyes would glaze over and you might not know where to start. Anyway, these are the things I see most often that are truly detrimental to blog success. Always remember your blog is about your readers and making their visits as pleasant and productive as possible. Your aim should always be to create a consistent, easy on the eyes environment for your viewing audience.

I don't have a contact form, thanks for reminding me about that...I've thought of putting one up there before but keep on forgetting.

I am also guilty of topic hopping, but I don't care...my brain is sporadic =)

Good list. I hate flashy blogs with a ton of wigets. It is hard for me to take them seriously.

I agree with this list, but I don't know how much inconsistent posting is a blog killer.

I think for some niches that it is a killer like MMO or IM because it is vital to stay up to date, but for other niches like raw vegan dieting, it is less important. It is a little more forgivable in these types of niches because of the audience.

Hello,

Nice post in here.

I got a template with cute animated heading. Does that count as #3 on your list (annoying)? :-D

By the way, my template sometimes annoys me too. When viewing it using my laptop, gray blank heading appears instead of my animated heading. But when using my brother's desktop, everything looks good. Can you tell me what's wrong with my template? Or what application/software does my laptop need to view it correctly?

Lastly, how do I request a blog review from your site? Is it for free? I just want to know what other bloggers think of my blog.

Thanks,
hunnypop

Thanks so much for these pointers, Blog Angel. Klinika Kinetics will see some content and physical improvements...and hopefully more visitors as well. I'd be coming back for more inputs.

While I am certain that none of the loyal BlogsWithWings readers would make any of these mistakes, I appreciate the pointers anyway!
