8 Ways To Get More Comments On Your Blog Posts

As a blogger I'll bet you've experienced the thrill of finding comments on your posts. It's like finding gifts under the Christmas tree, but there never seems to be enough, does there? We would all like more comments on our posts after all, we work better when we recieve an affirmation for our efforts, it makes it all worthwhile. There is nothing more disappointing to us as bloggers, than a well-written post that gets little or no response from our readers.

Don't be despondent my blogging fiends - uh, I mean friends, I bring you hope.

Follow up:

There are things you can actively do to help encourage your readers to post more frequently.

1. - Use a more relaxed and conversational writing style. Try to connect to your readers in a way that is less formal and more personable. This style of writing is more likely to create a connection between you and your readers. It makes your posts more user friendly.

2. - Ask questions within the body of your post text. Ask them what they think about this topic, offer your take on it and prompt your readers to reflect on what they think about your point of view. Readers who are actively thinking are more likely to engage in commenting.

3. - Establish a regular posting pattern and do your best to maintain it. Your readers will become attuned to the rythym of your posts, creating a sense of expection for them. They are more likely to stop by regularly if they know when and how often your posts will appear.

4. - Don't be afraid to be controversial. If a subject is debateable, readers are likely to engage in a conversation with you and other commenters on your blog. Lively debates can be a very good way to elicit a response from your readers and give them a chance to interact in meaningful ways.

5. - Maintain a Do Follow blog. Make sure to advertise this fact by prominently displaying a Do Follow button or badge. When readers know that the link to their own site will be followed as a result of leaving comments, they will be much more likely to leave comments on your blog. Check Randa Clay's to find more information on how to set up this feature on your blog and get a free badge to display for your readers.

6. - If you moderate comments, review and approve them promptly. It's just not a good practice to leave unapproved comments hanging in limbo for days on end. Reader's aren't going to keep commenting if you are slow to respond, they'll think you don't value them. They may stop coming by altogether and you really don't want that to happen.

7. - Reply to readers comments daily. Everyone likes to be acknowledged, don't you? By responding to your readers promptly, they will be encouraged to return time and again. After all blogging allows for a unique experience with the written word. You usually can't engage in a conversation with a book author, but a blog is much more social in nature.

8. - It may seem obvious, but ask your readers to comment. At the close of your posts invite your readers to share their responses to your article. Ask them what they think, prompt them to share ideas and insights with you and your other readers. And be prompt to respond to them when they do. A person who comments should be rewarded with your quick attention, after all, you will never build a strong community of readers if they feel snubbed.

In a nutshell, you should be making every effort to connect to the people who comment on your blog. After all, you will never build a close knit family of readers if they feel ignored and under-appreciated. Building your readers into community is what will lift your blog above the mediocre. Blogging is as much about making connections as it is about authorship. Take every opportunity to let your readers know that they are special and that you appreciate them, especially when they leave you comments.

Another excellent post, Joella. I found item #6 is very important. In my personal experience if I made a comment and is not published within 24 hours, I feel I am not appreciated as a reader/ commentator. On the other hand, I have on line friends who never commented on my blog, although I am a frequent commentator on their blogs. Perhaps, they are not interested in the subject matter of my blog, but saying I heard you or just visited your blog will make me a happy reader/commentator.

@David B - I appreciate you David! And don't you forget it. Yes, I too have discovered how very important it is to acknowledge the people who take the time to comment on my blog. I now try to respond to those who leave comments within 24 hours. Even sooner when I can.

@Cath Lawson - You make an excellent point about linking out. I don't use this particular tactic, but if it works for you that's great. My linking out is motivated a little differently, I often link, at the end of a post, to quality related articles. This is a service to my readers, but if someone out there notices the link back to their site they do sometimes stop by and leave comments.

Great info. I have written it all down. My way of getting people to come comment on my blog is by going to a lot of other blogs and commenting on their blogs. And most people will come and comment on mine. But your suggestions are even better.

@Marg - It's so rewarding when someone like you stops by and takes the time to let me know that they have found the information here helpful. You should also check out the linked article at the end of this post. More great ideas on building a community around your blog.

Hi Joella. Good tips and contemplation.

Here is my tip out of my experience. Don't encourage people to comment or you will need to disable that option in future because of hundreds of comments a day.

Are you worried about less comments?

Display below message

'Because of huge spam comment has been disabled'

Visitor will have impression that the blog is very famous.

;-)

@lasvak - If you are getting that many comments, then you are definitely doing something right. But I find your response is somewhat dishonest. Instead of blaming spam, choose a cut off point. The maximum number of comments you want to display. When the comments reach that number close the comments and display this message:

"Due to overwhelming response to this post, comments have been closed."

More honest and less likely to discourage your regulars.

Great tips, thank you!

My blog is pretty small and usually only friends visit it. Quite hard to get them to open up. Your tips should help a lot.

Commenting on their blogs help a lot too. Most bloggers love to exchange comments indirectly. So, comment in lots of blogs :)

and don't install a difficult captcha system lol

@Michael Aulia - I regualarly exchange comments with a fairly small group of friends who go out of their way to be supportive of my blog. I also comment on a number of Do Follow blogs that have a higher page rank than my own and cover topics similar to my own. I wish I had time to comment on the blogs of everyone who stops by BWW and leaves comments. Sometimes I do, but I just don't have that much time. But yes we should comment on others' blogs - reciprocity is a great strength among bloggers.

Be an famous bloggers and everyone will start to comment of your post.

@Blog Tactic - yup, being a famous blogger will get you tons of comments. However, mostly people comment on these blogs to get quality linkbacks and in the hopes that perhaps someone else in the crowd will notice. Famous blogger don't have the time to actually respond to their comments. Kinda sad really.

Hi Joella - You have some great tips in this post.

Asking questions of your readers and asking them to comment is important, if you want to encourage discussion.

I would also add the importance of linking out to those who have written on a similar topic, as they will often be interested in exchanging ideas in the comment section.

I try to link out to folk who comment on my blog regularly, as opposed to getting the attention of some A lister.

"Due to overwhelming response to this post, comments have been closed."

Amen.

they are good words indeed and gives positive impression.

@Lasvak - Yes indeed, whenever possible, accentuate the positive. You don't want to send negative messages if you don't have to.

Hmm,seems I am lacking in a few of your points,Joella. I don't ask questions within my post,I don't have a "do follow blog",have to check that out, and duh! I don't ask my readers to comment. Well,it looks like I have some work to do. Thanks for the advice, and you have given me some things to work on. I appreciate it.

@Dave DeWall - There is always room for improvement and there is always a lot of hit and miss to find what works for you. I just hope that some of these ideas will help you with your blog.

it's really hard to get my visitor to comment on my blog. I realized that my blog only one month old since it rebuild. I almost done every thing that you said above. any advice for me?

I am happy to say I follow all your points but one. I don't comment on my comments. The main reason I don't do this, I feel the comment section then becomes way to long. For instance if you have 12 comments then it turns into 24. Instead I go to the posters blog/website and make a comment on one of their posts, to let them know I appreciate their visit. It helps their post with a comment and also it adds, sometimes a backlink to my blog.
11/27/09 @ 11:22
Comment from: blog_angel [Member] Email
@Man Over Board - I know I won't be able to keep up responding to all my comments, especially as Blogs With Wings grows, but for now this works for me. I think responding personally to comments is a good way for a new blog or a struggling blog to jump-start their traffic, to build a momentum. Of course there has to be a point where you do say: "I just can't do this anymore", due to the sheer volume of comments. There are options, however - like leaving a little note to your readers collectively thanking them for their comments. Or responding to people who make really good points or who ask a specific question.

We all have to find what works for us and our blogs.

I think be a 'do follow' blog increase comments frequency significantly.. but you should add with interesting articles and relaxed writing style as you said above :D
11/28/09 @ 02:56
Comment from: blog_angel [Member] Email
@2012 - You are right. A Do Follow blog will only get you so far. No one will leave comments if your posts aren't of the highest quality and easy to read.
11/28/09 @ 06:35
THANKS FOR YOUR IDEAS
FROM NOW I WILL TRY THEM.
