I will be really interested in if more people make comments if there is a Do Follow tag on the blog. So Guess I will go put that on my blog. I really don't look for the Do Follow before I make a comment. But I guess if it is there, it would make you more prone to making a comment.

@Marg Elmendorf,

Do Follow blogs should make sure they let people know, but not all do. You can find a add on for Firefox that will let you check for do follow functionality listed in the first post listed at the end of this post.

I don't really take much notice whether or not the blogs I'm commenting on are dofollow. I just comment when I have something to add. :-)

@John -

Nothing wrong with pure motives for commenting. But I encourage those who are going to use high ranked do follow blogs for SEO purposes to ensure they read the post and make intelligent and timely comments. Otherwise you fall into the category of spamming.

I used to have DoFollow pictures or had it in bold on the sidebar. But really what I am finding out, is that most blogs, are now dofollow. OK let me put it another way.

The blogs that you go to and like and want to comment on, are either aware of the importance of dofollow, or just good blogs period. Regardless if you get a backlink or not. Like the people right now commenting, we don't have to advertise we are dofollow, we want to comment anyway.

Regardless if you read a post and the more you blog and understand, will it stop you from posting if that blog is not a dofollow?

I have been to many dofollow blogs from different dofollow lists and the blogs aren't very good, some actually are horrible and why would I add a comment on them if I didn't like them myself and also why comment on a subject that was either nothing you thought was well written nor of any interest.

I think if you visit one or two new blogs a day and leave a comment on a subject that appealed to you, just do it. You will get plenty of backlinks no matter what, sooner or later. Besides that, more then likely the owner of the blog who saw your post, usually comes around to visit you and becomes a friend, regular or just someone who comments now and then.

At the beginning I thought oh how cool am I to be a dofollow, now I look at, oh how cool am I, finding new blogs that I actually like and will go back to and comment on them. I also don't try to find blogs just from EC, ADGIT and CMF. Many good blogs don't use them anyway.

I am glad I got to use these traffic builders, but honestly just like Screaming Me Me did yesterday, you need to wean yourself off these widgets and make your blog interesting, consistent and let it stand on it's own two feet.

The three mentioned traffic sites and dofollow are to me, like training wheels for new bike riders. I remember the day, still, when I took my bike for a spin without those damn extra pair of wheels. Yeah I fell a couple of times, but boy could I ride faster, do neater things and well just feel proud that I could do it without the extra help.

While I see the logic with much of what you say, there are some things I simply cannot agree with. By the very nature of the internet and the way users find what they want. It is wise to use SEO tactics that will put you in the path of the search engines. Quality backlinks are one the most effective ways to do this. As for weaning yourself off widgets and standing on your own, it's not the widget that brings you traffic, nor is it the blogging community, the forums, the social networking sites... It's how you use them and interact with them that nets a blogger the most return. If you can use these as tools to build connections with potential readers then you are helping build the quality of your blog along with the quality of your relationships with the people who connect with you and your blog.

As for commenting on Do Follow blogs, I comment on several. Probably every other day. They all have some things in common, besides the fact that they are Do Follow blogs. They are high in quality, are in areas that either personally or professionally interest me and they all have a page rank of 5 or 6. In point of fact the reason they have such high page rankings is that they are extremely high quality blogs and it is a pleasure to read them and comment on them.

I also comment on several blogs for the simple reasons that I like them and/or I have a personal relationship and interest in the authors of those blogs, regardless of their page rank or do follow practices. For me it's not either or it's both.

And sadly a good many blogs, at the mercy of their blogging platforms and their blissful ignorance, continue to have No Follow enabled on their blogs. And of course there are the guys out there, who have made it and they don't have DoFollow enabled, because it's just easier to let the No Follow tag deal with the potential spam.

Me I haven't "made it". Not yet, and if I do, I will my damnedest to keep this blog Do Follow. And I will continue to encourage my readers to continue building their readership through the use of various social networking, blogging communities and other services that may help them get closer to their goals.

I agree with you, as I do as much commenting as time allows on blogs I enjoy also. So we have that in common. The problem and perhaps I didn't articulate it well enough, is I don't go out of my way to find a dofollow blog to add a comment.

The dofollow lists that I found (I have not spent a ton of time on researching the lists. I merely picked the lists that were high in the Google search rankings). Those lists that I went on, had very few good blogs, perhaps they SEO'd their sites to get included in the top of Google search.

When I first started out and made comments I had no idea what dofolllow meant. If you decided tomorrow to no longer not use dofollow on BWW,I would still come here and comment regardless. That is why it is important to network with all kinds of Social Media.

I do believe though that many who belong to places like EC continue to do their drops to get to the prescribed 300 a day, many not leaving comments, nor even reading the blog they just dropped on. Almost robotic.

We agree to disagree, but I am not sure what we disagree on? Is it the fact that I believe the widgets like EC should be a useful building tool and at some point not have to be relied upon as heavily and to be replaced or taken off?

Because I do believe that all "good" blogs should be dofollow, well at least until the Gods over at Google start to somehow penalize dofollow blogs even if they are good blogs. Just like the blogs you visit every other day that are not only high PR but also great blogs, if they took dofollow off tomorrow, would you stop visiting them?

I read people come on the internet for two main reasons.

1. To have a problem answered
2. To be entertained.

So I think if your doing a good enough job at one of the above your readership will continue to grow.

@Man Over Board - Any blog must be of high quality to succeed. It must meet the needs of it's intended audience. But that won't do you any good if they can't find you. That is why we do SEO and blog promotion. So those hungry souls can find the sustenance we have to offer.

I personally don't have that much time to run around reading and commenting on blogs. I have posts to write, topic research to conduct, comments to moderate, emails to answer, templates to design and a slew of other blog tasks to do on a regular basis. Not to mention my home and family obligations. It saves me loads of time if the blogs I like to read happen to be Do Follow blogs with a good page rank. And so I seek these out. True some are "just because", but they have to be pretty special and usually, like with us, part of a reciprocal exchange. The ones that get to be personal and about friendship.

I guess I just take the practical approach. You have to, if you want to get it all done.

The only way to get links anymore is to read lots of blogs and make comments. I am a member of many forums and social bookmarking sites as well.

Commenting is a really good way to increase backlinks, however, some people tends to make spammy comments and there are soooo many of them! Sometimes it good to make lots comment, but we have to make quality comments too, not just “Me too” or “Interesting Blog” or “Interesting Article” Comments.

This is a sound strategy. If you enjoy reading the material and it's a do follow blog as well, then you are more likely to keep up the practice and make meaningful comments as well. This will also benefit the blogs you comment on.

it is very true,Commenting on Do Follow blogs can  raise your page rank and
increase your search engine visibility. it is a good way to get backlinking.
thanks for nice post.

I agree with your rules. I understand that some and perhaps even a lot of the commenters on my blogs are there to post their links, but this can still be a win win situation, if they only contribute to the conversation. All I ask is that it be a “quality” comment… yes it should contribute to the conversation topic, but it should also be of decent length. This is subjective, but it’s something I look for.

You can imagine we post quite often on do-follow blogs :) Rupert Murdoch wants to cut linking access not only to regular users, but to search engines too (e.g., google).

Therefore, the linking back possibilty is the core of the Web IMO even more when you are doing SEO :D

cheers!
