If I suddenly seem absent from your blog comments section, please check your spam list in WordPress. Apparently, Akismet has marked me as a spammer and my comments are no longer appearing on most of the blogs that I comment on. This is very disturbing. You don’t think I am a spammer do you?
I was really puzzled, when recently all my comments just did not show up in most of the blogs I visit regularly. So I started wondering what was happening. And it crossed my mind that Akismet might have suddenly take a serious disliking to me. But how would I know for sure? So I got online and did a little research.
I stumbled upon this article from DragonBlogger.com and realized that Akismet was most likely responsible:
The article didn’t answer all my questions, but it did point me to a more complete article on the topic from Zemalf.com:
After reading both these articles I became pretty sure that Akismet is blocking me. So if you are missing me and my comments on your blog, just check your spam files, I’m probably in there. Sigh. :p
If this is happening to you, just click on the image of the Zemalf post above. Just follow the instructions that will lead you through where and how to contact Akismet to get off their black list.
Well these things happen I guess. Who knows why? Not me that’s for sure. I’ll keep reading and commenting. And hopefully, in a week or two my comments will again be published automatically.

I don’t think Akismet is blocking you by itself – unless you’ve triggered it by writing some spammy words/links. It’s probably some blogs you’ve commented on that felt your comments were spam and clicked them as spam, and then teaching Akismet that comments from your e-mail address / URL / IP address (or whatever they use) are likely to be spam.
But you can contact Akismet and have them remove your URL. Takes a few days to get a reply, usually.

Thanks for your explanation and advice, Klaus.
I have already contacted Akismet and await their response. Hopefully all will be back to normal soon.
I’m terrible about checking my spam folder, but I’ll go that now. One of my blogging friends, Farnoosh, was having similar trouble lately. I’ll tweet this (and this reminds me to tweet your ebook page again too) and then go make sure you didn’t get chucked in the spam bin.

Hello Joella,
You are in good company. Far more bloggers who are regular commentators have been flagged by Akismet as spammers than anyone suspects.
Hi Gail,
Strangely enough I contacted Akismet yesterday and figured that it would be days before I heard anything. But I have to give them credit, there was an email waiting for me this morning, stating that the problem was fixed. That is probably the fastest response I’ve ever had when contacting an organization on line about a problem with their software or service. So my hat is off to Akismet and their quick response to my dilema.
Thanks for the mention – I’m happy that my post helped you to solve this…
Sometimes one just ends up in the Akismet “black list” for no reason, and since Akismet is keeping their system a secret (to keep it working wel against real spam), there’s no way of knowing how one ends up on the list.
If your comments are non-spammy and you apply to the comment policies on the blogs, you can always get away from the list by contacting Akismet support (after confirming you are blocked with fellow blogger or the test blog I set up).

Oh yes, your post was very helpful as was the test page that helped me determine what exactly was happening.
I can understand why Akismet keeps their process a secret. After all we don’t want the real spammers getting around the system. Thankfully it was all worked out very quickly.
So THAT explains it then?!? ( I was running your comments through Google translate to see if you had inadvertently called my mother a goat in Icelandic or something?)
Awesome Joella, nice that you turned it into a pretty sweet post and reference too.

Actually I called her a goat in Klingon, which every true Trekkie will know is a compliment in that culture. Ha – try to find that online. Actually if you did find it online, I’d be very surprised, since I just made that up. I’m sure your mother is a sweetheart of a woman, after all she had a hand in shaping who you are and that seems to have turned out very well.
Seriously, thanks Alex. I’m glad to know that you found me lurking in your spam comments file. Angels are tested regularly to see how the will handle adversity. So I try my best to find the silver lining in every cloud, the jelly center in every donut…
mmmmmm… donuts.
Hey Joella, I read about some problems with Akismet for legitimate bloggers over at @GrowMap and it seems to be a growing concern. Both DragonBlogger and Zemalf are excellent resources for taking down the bad guys!

Cheers!
